The first game exploded in popularity from a series of Let’s Play videos back in August, and barely two weeks ago a sequel was unveiled alongside a tantalizing new trailer. Since it came from an indie developer, the sequel had to go through the Steam Greenlight process once again despite the first game being such a hit. As anyone could have guessed, the sequel passed with flying colors (or at least, the color green) within a week. More surprising however, is the revelation that the game must have been virtually complete as this process was occurring.
Promising a new set of animatronics, flashlight gameplay and an abrupt lack of doors, Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 looks like a title ready to up the scare factor even more than the original cult hit - and so far, it is delivering on all fronts.
We jumped into the game the minute we saw it became available, and can confirm a number of new gameplay elements and animatronics. The most noticeable change is the inclusion of a wind-up music box in one of the rooms which the player must routinely go and remotely wind via the camera interface. Failing to wind this up every minute or so results in a terrifying marionette rushing the player, causing an immediate failure. The inclusion of this requirement forces players to remain constantly vigilant, as they may find themselves in situations where jumping to the camera to wind up the box could mean leaving themselves defenseless against other animatronics roaming around.
There’s also a new, humanoid-esque animatronic with a balloon sign that stumbles around. He’ll disable the lights if he gets into the room, so players will have to keep an eye on him whilst watching out for the old and new regular cast of animatronics, each of which have their own new specialties - we’ll fill you in on that in the full review.
